Cheara is a 2 year old girl who just had a liver transplant at the Donald Gordon Medi Clinic in Johannesburg.

Cheara was born with a disease called Alpha Antitripsen disfunction which causes chirrosis and liver failure. We always knew that one day in the future she will require a liver transplant. She had a live donor liver transplant with her daddy as the live donor, meaning he donated the left lobe of his liver to her.

The transplant was a success, however she had some serious complications about a month after the transplant she had a serious bout of rejection (the immune system fighting the new organ). The doctors were able after serious intravenous steroid treatment to halt the rejection, however the damage had already been done. She had had two thirds of her bile ducts basically destroyed (serious liver disease all over again)

The plans now are as follows. We take it day by day, The team of specialists taking care of her are hoping that the bile ducts will grow back. There has been a couple of cases reported in the medical field where this has happened. Although there is just as much chance of that not happening and another transplant would then be our only option.

She is now 3 and a half months post transplant and hoping for the best. She is suffering from jaundice, pruritus (itching), diarree, and a very low appetite. She takes 11 different medications daily, draws blood every 2 weeks and visits the doctor monthly to every second month depending on her condition.

Our expenses for medication, accommodation, blood tests, doctors visits etc are currently going through the roof, and we do not see a light at the end of the tunnel yet. We have been able to support all costs for the last two and a half years, but after the transplant our medical expenses almost trippled. We've got good medical insurance but not everything are covered by them. There are still the costs for travelling, guesthouse fees, levies on the medication and bloodtests.
